STATEWIDE DEFINITION: Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a process through which individuals build awareness and skills in managing emotions, setting goals, establishing relationships, and making responsible decisions that support success in school and in life. (OSPI Website)

School should be a place where everyone feels comfortable, where everyone is unique, and you don’t have to be perfect.

What is SEL?

SEL is rocket fuel. It is an accelerator for our society. SEL helps kids have a sense of self, find their purpose, and to prepare for wherever they choose to go in life.
— CASEL INTERVIEW

What I Wish I Knew

I wish I had known that the adults were prepared, that they had what they needed to be able to model the SEL skills for kids...that they themselves were well...
— SEL District Lead

The Missing Link

I’m trying to relate to my kids more on their level. It helps to let them know you care about them.

SEL Check-in / Check-out

A Daily Support System for Students…and Staff?

Students who need extra social and emotional support have a quick check-in with an adult at the start and end of each day. Could we do this with each other?

Adults can also check-in with each other after building trust by doing a simple check-in before checking out at the end of the day. Get agreement with colleagues if this could be an SEL strategy for your group to try.

These are potential stepping stones for creating safe and healthy school culture.
